Start Your Day with Warm Water & Lemon

Start Your Day With Water & Lemon

No matter the day
No matter the season
Drink your warm water n’ lemon
For all sorts of reason

What you do first thing in the morning can have a significant effect on the rest of your day.   Set yourself up for an exceptional day, seriously consider adding warm water and lemon to your early morning routine. Take a mug of warm water and add the juice of ½ a lemon to it*.  It is so simple and easy to make and gives you huge benefits!

I was introduced to this morning ritual several years ago while visiting Sanoviv Medical Clinic (an exceptional functional medical institution) and now rarely miss a morning.

7 Reasons to Start Your Day with Warm Water and Lemon:

1. Increases Hydration. Being well hydrated is a critical part of optimal health.

Dehydration affects your body’s ability to perform many essential functions. First thing in the morning your body is relatively dehydrated. As you sleep, your body draws water from your blood stream to complete its key functions such as detoxing, rebuilding and repairing your cells. Thicker blood puts extra pressure on your heart.

Dehydration also decreases your blood’s ability to take nutrients to your cells and get rid of the toxins that accumulate from your cell’s day-to-day activities. It can lead to a host of health problems; constipation, toxic build up, hormonal imbalances and skin problems and inflammation, to name a few.

Hydrate – it promotes optimal health and reduces your risk of disease.

2. Stimulates healthy elimination: Warm water encourages your intestinal peristalsis, the rhythmic wave like muscle contractions in your intestines that leads to elimination. Eliminating within an hour of waking helps your body get rid of accumulated toxins that can otherwise be reabsorbed. In Ayurvedic medicine when these toxins or ama build up it is believed that they lead to an imbalance and eventually diseases.

Drink your lemons – they are important for optimal health!!

3. Supports your body’s detoxification: Lemon juice helps your liver flush out unwanted toxins and acts as a mild diuretic. Lemon’s high vitamin C content neutralizes free radicals created in the liver during the detox. It also helps to produce bile and is said to help break down gallstones.

Protect your liver – add lemons to your water!

4. Alkalines your body: Maintaining a healthy PH balance supports optimal health. An alkaline body helps decrease inflammation, prevents disease and supports easy weight loss. Lemons, despite their tart taste, actually alkaline the body.

Don’t be skimpy with your lemon juice – alkaline!

5. Boosts your immune system, supports heart and skin health: Lemons pack a powerful vitamin C punch, helping you ward off coughs, colds and flu bugs while stimulating healthy glowing skin. Their high potassium content is also hugely helpful to your heart, supporting healthy blood pressure.

Value lemons’ antiseptic, anti-microbial and mucus-resolving action!

6. Supports healthy digestion: Drinking lemon water ½ hour before a meal stimulates your digestive enzymes. As you age and experience stress, your production of digestive enzymes declines. This can lead to undigested food making its way to your intestinal track and your blood, poor nutrient absorption and numerous complications can arise including bloating, acid reflux, leaky gut etc..

Keep inflammation and disease at bay – drink your lemon water.

And last but definitely not least….

7. Relaxes and de-stresses: Warm water and lemon not only nurtures the body, but can feed the soul. Taking time to drink this warm soothing drink first thing in the morning can set you up for a de-stressed day.

Take time to contemplate your day, even if it for a few minutes.

*If it’s too tart, start with a ¼ of a lemon and gradually increase.  Also consider adding a pinch of Cayenne pepper. It not only adds a great “wake me up” kick, boost your metabolism, but can help heal your stomach and intestinal track.
